What Makes You Different From The Competition?

“It’s all about you”

What sets you apart? In marketing jargon, this is also known as finding your “unique value proposition”. In a nutshell, this is what defines you as being distinct. It’s what you provide customers or clients that your competitors don’t, and how you can solve problems or improve their lives better than any other business. Determining how you are distinct (and getting it down on paper) is a useful part of developing a business plan that will consistently inform your marketing strategy and tactics.

Example of being Distinct

There are thousands of realtors. If you had ten realtors stand in front of you and if you asked each one what they did for a living my guess is they would all say “I’m a realtor”. This is one reason many of them never succeed or just make a living at best. What if the first nine said the same thing but the tenth stated “I’m a property acquisition specialist” ? Hint: It’s the same thing only being more distinct. My guess is you would pay more attention to that person than the other nine “realtors”.  So, what you need to do is figure out what makes you different and you will become “distinct” and remembered.

Tips To Define What Makes You Distinct

Caution! Never say “you offer great customer service”! This does NOT make you different or stand out as being distinct. Everyone says they offer great customer service. You want to be different than everyone else.

Ask Around. Ask your clients if they would refer you to friends, and what they would say about you and your products or services. These insights will help you figure out what customers appreciate most about your business. You may be suprised at the responses and it will help you determine what makes you memorable.

Find Your Intersection. Focus your distiction on the intersection of four things:

What you do best.

What your ideal clients value (and will pay for).

What you love to do.

What you do to be memorable.

Once you’ve defined what makes you and your products or services unique, you will have a clearer idea of how to market them to customers and how to beat your competitors.
